Inspiring Fishing Trips

La Reserve Beauchene, Quebec

I have been fortunate enough to have visited and fished La Reserve Beauchene in Quebec on three different and very unique occasions. My fourth visit in early July, 2015 was another exceptional opportunity that I just couldn't pass up … and that was to guide some visitors who were there for a large corporate event. My first visits to Beauchene several years ago included lots of fishing but I also assisted with some research and stocking efforts. My third visit, was while I was editor of the seasonal  "BASSMAN Magazine" and I was there on assignment to write about this fabulous one of a kind fishing resort and it's world class bass fisheries. You can read about those experiences here.

2015 All Boyz Fathers Day Weekend Canoe and Fishing Trip - Killarney Ontario

Nothing beats good outdoor family traditions and for my two sons Tyler and Izaak our first Fathers Day weekend trip began way back when they were in kindergarten.  We haven’t missed a year since and for more than a decade now my brothers Marcel and Paul and their sons Josh and Cody plus a couple close friends Mitch Backx and Chris Mikkelsen and their sons ... have all enjoyed a camping, canoeing, kayaking and fishing trip together on this weekend.

Fishing Lake Chautauqua - Three Times A Charm!

Fishing Lake Chautauqua - Three Times A Charm!

During the last half hour of our 4 ½ hour drive from the GTA to New York’s Lake Chautauqua my son Izaak and I were beginning to think we might not get out fishing as the constant rain, cold and wind did not look all that inviting. When we pulled into the gates at We Wan Chu Cottages, it had stopped raining and Peter, the owner was there to greet us. We would be staying in the same cottage as last year and our boat in the same slip. This would be our home away from home for the next five days and the familiarity and inviting atmosphere of this fish-friendly resort helped get us into vacation mode right away. As it was already close to suppertime, and the rain started again, we chose to just launch the bass boat, tie her up to our slip and get ready to fish the next day.

Olive the Lake ... A Fishing Vacation To Remember!

Pssssss! We could hear the loud hissing noise just as we were about to pull off the highway and onto the roadway leading to the fishing resort. Our ominous arrival at Olive the Lake Resort may have begun with a blown tire but there’s no doubt it let folks at the resort know that the Wegman brothers have made arrived! Knowing time was of the essence, I scurried over to the resort's boat launch and parked my truck and Nitro bass boat ready to launch just as the tire went completely flat. Right away, Bruce MacDonald ... the owner and resort guests Scot Primo and his wife Cindy came out to welcome us and ...even better- help to change the flat. It was a strangely memorable and wonderful start to an even more wonderful fishing vacation at the end of September with my brother Marcel (aka Red).

Wil with one of several nice largemouth bass caught during the early bass season on Lake Chautauqua

Fishing Lake Chautauqua, NY

Two years ago I paid my first visit to this lake and had such a great time with my brother Red that I wanted to share the experience some day with my son Izaak as well.  That opportunity came at the beginning of June and as expected, the early bass fishing season New York has to offer did not disappoint!  Each day we enjoyed plenty of thrilling bass action ... and like my son said, "You know you've done really well, when at the end of the day you've lost track of how many bass you've actually caught". Yah- we did get lots of big-uns but the best part is this was really my 26 year old son's first extended bass fishing vacation – where fishing 10-12 hours each day is par for the course and no other activities really get in the way from that.
