Well I'm finally back, and all I can say is wow! What a trip! I've been in the depths of Algonquin Park for a week and have been busy this past weekend so finally now I have the time to sit down and write up my report! We went in there expecting the worst in both bugs, and weather but to our surprise the bugs were basically non exist ant until the day we left, and the rain. Well even though it rained everyday in there it was only on and off for 5 min or so here and there so it was quite tolerable! The first and last days of our 6 day trip was nothing but portageing.
Besides eating like kings the entire trip we had a moose give birth to twins on an island not 60 yards from our site! Unfortunately one of the calves died on the 3rd day but the other one was looking like it was in good shape and when we got out of the park the park staff were on there way to that lake the next day to do some calf tagging and collaring. Hope they got em! Our trip included my father, his good friend Bob and myself, one of my best buds had to cancel at the last minute so one of us had to solo one of the canoes, we ended up buying a kayak paddle. What a difference! Definitely the way to go if your soloing in the wind on big lakes! We ended up seeing 16 moose, 4 deer, and 4 beavers and lots of wildlife and the one moose was not too shy! This moose came right through our camp site!
The fishing was spectacular to say the least! We ended up with 17 specks, all in the 2-4lbs class and 35-40 lake trout all 4-6lbs. The size aspect of the trip was the best I've ever seen in the park! Everything was caught on EGB's and for those who don't know what an EGB is, it stands for an exceptionally good bait! 90% of the fish were caught flatlining and a few casting into the shorelines! On the second day Bob had lost my EGB on what he thought was a snag, not a big deal, but the following night we went back out around the same island and I hooked a 3.5lbs speck! As we landed the fish I went to get my EGB out of its mouth but low and behold, there was my other spoon! This fish had both my EGB's in it's mouth! What a riot! Another one of the days I was fighting a lake trout in the 5lbs class and as it was beside the canoe I looked down and saw a 4lbs speck flying around the laker eating whatever the laker was spitting up. I've seen this with bass many times but never I have seen that with trout! I screamed at Bob to throw his spoon in the water but his line was tangled around his tip. So with the laker in my right hand I tried to untangle the line with my left, as I was fumbling around his spoon hit the water and I watched the speck come flying up and inhale his spoon 4" from my hand! I set the hook with my left hand and it was game on! We ended up landing them both! That's a memory that is burned into my mind and I don't think will ever leave! One of the most amazing sights I've ever had the pleasure of watching! Unreal!
The only real unfortunate part to the trip is that someone decided to search through my fathers pack and stole all 3 of his tackle box's! The nerve of someone doing that really pissed us off, I mean were in the middle of nowhere and someone has the odasity to do something like that! So not only my dad had to use all of my gear (witch was no problem) but now he has to go replace all of it. Figuring about a grand worth by the time he's done. But other than that the trip went pretty smoothly! Hope you all enjoy the pics!
